Tsuji Sekisai comes from a line of lacquerers associated with the Senke tea schools. He was born in 1963 in Ishikawa Prefecture and after a time studying economics and dealing in tea utensils started training with his father in 1992, taking the name Sekisai in 2003. He demonstrated at the Aichi World Expo (2005) and the Museum of Modern Art (2006) and has had numerous departmental-store exhibitions.
