A fubuki (tea caddy of cylindrical form with a beveled edge), the turned-wood body finished in polished deep-black roiro lacquer and decorated on the top and sides in silver and two tones of gold hiramaki-e with paulownia leaves, flowers and seed-heads, the interior and recessed base in silver lacquer, the rims in gold lacquer.

Comes with a fitted paulownia-wood tomobako storage box inscribed 'Tea caddy with paulownia leaves in maki-e, silver-ground interior', and signed 'made by Shikō' and sealed Shikō.

Born 1941 in Ishikawa Prefecture, a center of high-quality lacquer production, Hosokawa Shikō trained with lacquer artists in Yamanaka Town and in 1969 became an independent specialist in maki-e (sprinkled metal powder decoration). In 1983 he won First Prize in the Yamanaka Town Lacquerers’ Exhibition, a major turning point in his career.
