A suzuribako with flush-fitting lid, the interior with a frame and platform, fitted at the top with a silver suiteki (water-dropper) chiseled in the form of a rustic hut and in the middle with a suzuri (ink stone) with a gold-lacquered rim, three compartments around and below the suzuri; all the surfaces except for the gold rims covered in black roiro lacquer, the exterior of the lid decorated in gold, aokin, and silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and togidashi maki-e with three hawk’s feathers, the interior of the lid decorated in gold, silver, and colored hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with three Chinese boys in a garden acting out adult roles as they play checkers under a pine tree, with embellishments in gold kirikane and hirame, the inside of the box decorated in similar techniques with a single pine branch and a rock, a large moon partially visible at top left.
