Honma studied bamboo plaiting techniques under Honma Kazuaki, his uncle and adopted father. He uses a wide range of techniques to create dramatic, sometimes large-scale sculptural works. His work is in the permanent collections of several US museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco.
