In a pond bordered by rocks swims a pair of Mandarin ducks. Surrounding the pond are a willow tree, red and white peonies and bamboo. In Japan, Mandarin ducks are a symbol of marital bliss. The plants have seasonal connotations: ever-green bamboo stands for winter, the willow is the harbinger of spring and peonies of early summer.
