A suzuribako of rectangular form with slightly domed kabusebuta (overhanging lid), comprising a base compartment in which a tray is placed, holding a suzuri (ink-grinding stone) and suiteki (water dropper) in the shape of a pond with three turtles; both the base and the lid are covered in roiro polished black lacquer, the exterior decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e depicting a stylised meandering stream.
