A hiranatsume (container for powdered tea), the turned-wood body finished in polished deep-black roiro lacquer and decorated on the top and sides with three chrysanthemum blossoms in gold takamaki-e (high-relief gold lacquer) and kirigane gold foil, the interior and bottom finished in gold nashiji (gold flakes set in lacquer). Red-lacquer kaō (cursive monogram) of a tea master on the inside of the lid.

Comes with the original fitted double wooden tomobako storage boxes, the outer one lacquered with tamenuri clear lacquer and bearing a paper label dated mizunoto-tori 癸酉 (1993), the inner kiri-wood box inscribed under the lid Kiku natsume 菊棗 (Chrysanthemum container for powdered tea) followed by a tea-master's kaō (cursive monogram); the base signed Shisshō 漆匠 (Lacquer artist) Hosai 甫斎 with seal Hosai 甫斎.

Born in Ishikawa Prefecture, Hosai studied lacquer techniques under his father Yamashita Seihō while training in shitaji (preparation of the lacquer ground coats) and maki-e (sprinkled-gold-powder decoration). He succeeded to the family title as Hosai II in 1978 and has continued to work in a style that preserves traditional techniques while aiming at a more contemporary feel.
